The Long And Superlative History Of The Drum
The concept of the drum goes a long distance back in our world’s history. People used drums to produce sounds as far as 6000 B.C. In these old cultures, like the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas, this instrument was played when they threw parties. Drums were discovered in many sites of these ancient burial areas by scientists and discoverers.
Many individuals figure that it is the main body of the drum that produces the sound. But, it is not; it is the pulled out fabric covering the top, called, the membrane, that is responsible for the beat. The sound is produced when the top of the drum is whacked with a stick of some sort. When the drum is drummed on, the membrane vibrates and sends the sound waves into the hollowed out stock of the drum. The Indians actually made sticks to hit the drum with during rituals and festivities.
In the nineteen hundreds, drums were to be further built upon, and in time, the drum set was born. A drum set consists of: a tom-tom, cymbals, snare drums, and bass drums (one of these bass drums has a foot pedal to produce the sound. Other percussion instruments like bells, chimes, and wood blocks were included in the arsenal of instruments to produce even more sounds to add to the overall melody of a song. These collections were introduced at the beginning days of rock, drum kits like those described above were necessary for rock groups. You were left in the dust if you were without drums.
Like other instruments, drums became digitized for for production of created beats. Digital devices like keyboards, synthesizers, and drum machines made it possible for one to create any sound he/she desired with the push of a button. These sounds put together with synthesizers were unique and not available to be heard from set of drums. Therefore, modern music employs these devices for such reasons.
Drums were not exclusively used for tunes. In fact, Africans used to beat drums as a form of speaking with one another. A series of drum tones would signal something that others in the tribe would understand. Drums were also the pinnacle of a symbol of spirit for Indians of the Americas, as well as people around the world. Most believed this instrument to be a male and give them as a gift to teen boys becoming men.
The drum pumps out bass like no other. Drums have been included in genres like: rock and roll, funk, blues, classical music, and other music groups. Next time you attend a concert of music, look in the band and you will notice a drum or set of drums of some sort. These instruments are good for percussion and low tones; because of this, they are an instrument that has many applications and produces sounds that go along with any beat or melody.
