Drum Sheet Music
Learning to read drum sheet music may be baffling for some drummers, but those who are willing to learn it will, for the rest of their playing careers, thank this unique and wonderful skill.
Whenever people think of sheet music, pictures of orchestras, conductors, and violinists come into place. They read sheet music to follow the conductor and duplicate the notes that Mozart wrote in his masterpiece. It is an art to read one. But in modern, contemporary music, things are viewed differently for drummers and percussionists.
Drummers have always been looked upon as the musicians who can neither read nor write drum sheet music. Most people think that all drummers just pound their stick onto the drumheads and make noise. It is not noise. It is rhythm – an independent coordination of specific patterns.
Playing the drums is similar to an orchestra in itself. With all the limbs playing a different part, it is up to the conductor, or in this case the mind, to combine all of the patterns to make a simple beat. With sheet music, it is even easier because the drummer now has to focus in the basic parts of the music sheet.
Learning to read and write drum sheet music is the best way for drummers to expand their learning and playing onto the next level. It my not be easy at first, but come to think of it, nothing really is – but the quest to become a complete musician for drummers is nearly completed.
