Cymbals complete the Drum Kit
A drum kit can never be complete without a decent set of cymbals. Even the most extravagant of drum kits, which come with a multitude of toms, will never be complete without a set of these. They give the accent and the groove to the rhythm section. More importantly, these sheets of metal keep the time and dictate the tempo for the drummer. Besides this, it is used to generate the feel of the drum kit taking it from laid back all the way to very heavy.
There are many different ways to create cymbals, but only a few are tried and tested. During the old days, these are created by hammering a sheet of metal. This method is still done until today. Other modern methods of creating these from sheet metal are forging and casting. None of these techniques would be worthwhile if there is no tuning done. The quality of a cymbal all boils down to proper tone and effect.
Cymbals come in different shapes and sizes, all with varying sounds and tones. Usually, thicker sheet metal results in a very heavy and dark sounding tone while thinner ones sound lighter and usually louder. The bigger the plate of the piece the longer type of sustain it can produce. Combinations of these conditions make each one unique. Make the right set of cymbals to produce different effects to complement the music, which you play. From cool light jazz all the way to screaming heavy metal, these can help create the mood for the music.
