Drum Skins

Drum skin is the most essential factor for a drum kit to sound good. A quality drum skin provides a quality sound that brings out the best out of the drum set. So, when buying a drum kit, the drum skin or drum head should be one of those things to be highly considered.

There is no right or wrong in buying a drum skin. Every musician has its own taste and every drum head has its own distinct sound. There are different types of drum skins and each of them varies in look, texture, and most especially in sound. Thick drum skins are often used in rock acts for they produce louder sounds. Also there are different drum skins with cover that produce different overtones often used by jazz musicians. You can experiment on your own drum skin based on how crisp, or strong you wanted it to be. If you’re a beginner, you can start of with generic skins or the basic skin attached to your first drum kit, experiment with it and later on change to a better drum head. You can also play on how the shell holds the skin; tension is also a factor on how the drum skin sounds. The stronger it is stretched the higher its pitch would be, but that also means a decrease in volume.

Buying a drum skin isn’t really that complicated. You only have to look for the one that suits your sound and of course, the one that you think would last longer. Also replace the drum skin once in a while, because worn out skins lose quality. Branded drum skins are not highly required, though a better sound quality is guaranteed at a higher price. If you’re just a beginner, you can start of with generic cheap drum skins that also sound good. Experiment until you find the one that suits you.
